Introduction

In the much-celebrated YouTube beauty tutorial, renowned makeup artist, Melanie Mills, demystifies the art of contouring. Exuding a myriad of ingenious techniques to enhance facial features, this video is a goldmine for individuals developing their makeup craftsmanship. Get ready to delve into the beauty secrets that will keep you a step ahead!

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Starting with a Moisturized and Primed Canvas
Melanie strongly advocates for thoroughly moisturized and primed skin prior to any makeup application. This creates an even surface, enhancing the durability of the makeup.

2. Foundation Application
Melanie begins by applying a light layer of foundation for complete coverage, paying special attention to match the skin tone for a natural look.

3. The Art of Contouring
To contour, Melanie employs a darker shade on the hollows of the cheekbones, the temples, and along the jawline. This creating the illusion of a deeply sculpted, radiant, and more defined face.

4. Highlighting
Melanie teaches us to apply a lighter shade on the higher points of the face such as the bridge of the nose, cheekbones, cupid’s bow, and forehead.

5. Blend, Blend, and Blend
For a seamless, realistic look, Melanie puts emphasis on blending – the golden rule of makeup. Using a beauty blender, she expertly fuses the contour and highlight to avoid any harsh lines.

Key Tips and Advice

Melanie shares the game-changing technique of “reverse contouring,” which involves applying contour and highlight in layers. She opines that this technique, although time-consuming, yields a more natural yet dramatic result. Additionally, Melanie cautions against using fingertips for blending as it may make the makeup look patchy.

Conclusion

The highlight of Melanie’s video is its simplicity and effectiveness. Whether you’re already a contouring connoisseur or a complete novice, Melanie’s techniques and tips ensure that you leave feeling more confident in your makeup application abilities. Melanie encourages all her viewers to embrace these methods, experiment with them, and make them their own.

Smooth and Engaging Flow

From prepping your skin to blending your heart out, each step of Melanie’s routine guides you organically on a journey to exploring makeup’s capacity to transform and enhance. Through her warm, conversational tone, Melanie encourages everyone to embrace their beauty and enjoy the artistry that comes with makeup application.

Dear god, thank you that I found this video, so I'm trans and have been working on getting makeup to a more professional feeling place. I got past the whole mask full of foundation look; and I can confirm a little goes a long way. And my next challenge has been blush.

What makes this more difficult is the cis women in my life know little to nothing about makeup, so in the past, I've gone with literal clown nose prints on my face with the dot of liquid blush.

I would always say I feel like it's too much, and they would respond with it's good glad I am not crazy lol

I've noticed that nowadays, when I'm considered middle aged ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ, that I need to be very careful with where to place the blush. Gone are the days when I could do my makeup without a mirror (true story and a girl gotta do what a girl gotta do) and instead make sure not to get the longest and droopiest face in mankind. If I get blush the tiniest bit below a certain point I'm done and need to start over.

Omg finally a video that shows the subtle Korean/Japanese style application that I prefer! I already have pink cheeks on a narrow face, so I really need a super super gentle blush look and I think itโ€™s prettier. This was SO useful! Iโ€™ve been wondering what type of blush brush to buy, what kind of formula, etc. And I was also confused about placement because Korean ones never show you where and how, they assume you know. Iโ€™ve basically only worn the light expanding colours that I have from lip products because I was so worried about buying the wrong shade of blush or overdoing it and looking insane. You even gave the tools needed for eachโ€”I donโ€™t wear foundation so I donโ€™t know what to do if I ever tried it but your video makes it clear how to do it and then shows some of my fav blush looks! And what I really like is that your application is so delicate that I feel like it teaches how to make styles I usually avoid look good.,Iโ€™m faving this and subscribing just in case she ever makes such a useful video again about anything. Thank you so much Tina!! โคโค๐Ÿฅฐ

In short, less is more. Need control not to put too much product. You can put the cream/liquid directly to the skin, no need to put it at the back of your hand, it's a waste.

I just realized that my typical blush style is kind of a weird blend of sculpted and undereye blush – I start applying it about the same as sculpted blush – maybe slightly higher – then blend towards the eye. Still has the slimming effect, and I feel like it draws a bit more attention towards the eyes

I agree that building your blush look with different shades is a great way to add dimensionality and zhuzh up any look. However, it is important to ensure that if you are that the colors are all in the same warmth level. If you blend a cool-toned blush (say, a lavender one) with a warm-toned one (like a peach or coral), your blush will appear murky and brown/grey and you will look sickly. Never EVER mix blush (and that goes for eyeshadow or any other makeup) that are on the complete opposite side of the warmth spectrum. If you do want to mix warm and cool toned makeup to take your look to the next level, here's a trick that I learned from many, many years of watercoloring: put them right next to each other, but they should NEVER touch! That way you get the beauty of both without any of the browns or greys…unless that's what you're going for. Try this and you'll see. Also if you're serious about makeup and love experimenting I highly recommend you watch a few videos on color theory so you can understand how colors interact with each other; this will allow you to look like you have your own personal MUA. After all, makeup is an art. You can thank me later….๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜
